UK Fisheries minister to give evidence to MPs on fishing grounds in Scotland

2 February 2023

UK Government Minister Rt Hon Mark Spencer MP will give evidence to the Scottish Affairs Committee on fishing grounds in Scotland.

This is the second evidence session examining fishing grounds, looking specifically at the ‘spatial squeeze’ on fishing, labour needs and fisheries negotiations with the EU and Norway. Members are likely to quiz the Minister on the UK Government’s approach to these issues, in particularly how it is addressing the ‘spatial squeeze’ on fishing. In a previous session the Committee heard how the growth of marine conservation zones and offshore energy is affecting access to fishing ground. The Committee will also explore how the UK Government’s migration policy is impacting the Scottish fisheries sector.

Further issues that may be discussed include the UK Government’s planned introduction of Highly Protected Marine Areas, and the recent catch allocation agreements reached with the EU and Norway.
