Spending Review – Chi Onwurah, Science, Innovation and Technology Committee Chair, comments on R&D funding

11 June 2025

The Chair of the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee has commented on today’s Spending Review from the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Chi Onwurah MP, said:

“I welcome the Chancellor’s commitment to cross government R&D spending. R&D funding is vital for the country: it can enable more science and tech innovation across the UK, create new jobs, and stimulate regional economic growth.

“As always with headline spending commitments, closer scrutiny is required. The committee will be examining the details behind today’s announcement to ensure that the government can properly deliver for the UK’s world-leading science and tech sectors. We’re beginning this in the upcoming weeks, first by questioning the outgoing CEO of UK Research and Innovation, Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, and then by exploring NHS digitisation as part of our Digital Government inquiry.”
