New name and remit for Commons Science and Technology Committee
26 April 2023
The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee has been renamed the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, following the recent machinery of government changes and the creation of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
As part of the change, the Committee adds to its remit scrutiny of the expenditure, administration and policy of the Science, Innovation and Technology Department and its associated public bodies. These are the usual responsibilities of Departmental Select Committees.
The Committee retains its remit to ensure that Government policies and decision-making across departments are based on solid scientific evidence and advice, including oversight of the departmental Chief Scientific Advisers.
The changes, which were agreed by the House of Commons on 27 March 2023, come into effect today, 26 April 2023. The Committee’s membership does not change.
Chair's comment
Chair of the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, said:
“We are pleased to officially take on the scrutiny of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology from today.
“Of course, science and technology touches many areas that go beyond this Department. So we are delighted to maintain our longstanding remit to examine the policies and applications of science and technology across all departments of government and beyond.”
