Committee holds a pre-appointment hearing with the Government’s preferred candidate for the role of Chair of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

Science and Technology Committee is to hold a pre-appointment hearing with the Government’s preferred candidate for the role of Chair of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Kwasi Kwarteng MP, publicly announced the Government’s preferred candidate Sir Andrew Mackenzie on 8 June.

A pre-appointment hearing is an opportunity for a select committee to scrutinise the quality of ministerial decision-making over appointments. It will also assess a candidate’s suitability for their appointment, including their knowledge, skills and independence of mind.

The Committee will then publish a short Report on the proposed appointment in the days following the session.
