Government Chief Scientific Adviser and Professor Brian Cox questioned on science funding

The Science and Technology Committee holds two evidence sessions on the science budget. In the first session evidence is taken from Professor Graeme Reid, Campaign for Science and Engineering, and Universities UK. The second session is with the Government Chief Scientific Adviser, followed by Professor Brian Cox.

Purpose of the session

This is the third hearing on the inquiry, following evidence from the Science Minister in July and other key research and technology funding bodies on 8 September.

In this hearing the Committee examines:

  • the current ring-fence budgetary arrangements
  • the rationale for any adjustment to the trajectory of future Government expenditure on science and research
  • the synergies between government and private sector investment
  • the UK's relative position among research competitor states.

The Committee aims to report ahead of the Spending Review in November 2015, which will set budgets (including the Science Budget) for 2016-17 onwards.
