PAC Chair says Children's safety must not be subject to a postcode lottery

23 January 2019

Public Accounts Committee Chair Meg Hillier MP has commented on today's National Audit Office report examining pressures on children's social care.

Chair's comment

Committee Chair, Meg Hillier MP, comments:

“With an overspend of £872 million last year on children's social care, and with local government under such funding pressure, Government has got to grasp the nettle.

“Children's safety and wellbeing must not be subject to a postcode lottery. It is appalling that the Department for Education does not fully understand what is driving demand for children's social care, or why there are such wide variations between local authorities.

“It must act swiftly to ensure long overdue improvements are made.”
