Chair's statement on strategic financial management in the MOD
17 July 2015
A statement from Meg Hillier MP, Chair of the Committee of Public Accounts:
"I welcome the signs of improving financial management at the Ministry of Defence. But the Ministry is not out of the woods when it cannot afford to maintain its huge estate, worth £31 billion, and can only pay for half of the infrastructure plans needed to deliver the strategic objectives of the Armed Forces. The Ministry faces a real test as to whether it can deliver the £6 billion of savings already assumed in future equipment budgets. It will also need to manage forthcoming possible cost pressures in other areas, such as staff, without resorting to the less efficient ways of working of the past.
I look forward to hearing how the Ministry will get to grips with these big challenges when it appears before my Committee in September."
