Government must be clearer on the many costs of Brexit

29 November 2018

Public Accounts Committee Chair Meg Hillier MP has commented on today's National Audit Office report examining the UK's financial settlement with the EU.

Chair's comments

The Committee Chair, Meg Hillier MP, comments:

"The financial settlement is only one small part of the total cost to the UK of Brexit. There are many other costs, including the expansion of Whitehall departments, that are not examined by the National Audit Office in this report but still cost the taxpayer dear.

"The Treasury needs to add up the additional costs to the UK of subscribing to EU bodies; setting up UK alternatives and implementation so that the public can see the real spending in real time. The NAO's latest report on the EU financial settlement is helpful as far as it can go.

"Ahead of the meaningful vote, the Government must be straight with Parliament, and the public, about what we and future generations will be paying."
