New inquiry launched into Written Parliamentary Questions: Departmental performance in Session 2024-25

28 April 2025

The Procedure Committee has launched a new inquiry into Written Parliamentary Questions: Departmental performance in Session 2024-25.

Cat Smith MP, Chair of the Procedure Committee, said:

“We’re continuing with our work to monitor the quality and timeliness of responses to written parliamentary questions, which Members of Parliament rely upon to get the information they need from ministers.

"This is the first inquiry assessing the performance of the current Government, who have committed to delivering prompt and high-quality responses. We look forward to holding them to account on this.”

Background

Since 2010, the Committee’s predecessors have been routinely engaged in the monitoring of Government responses to written parliamentary questions. This has, in the past, taken the form of quality monitoring work, offering Members of Parliament an avenue to challenge unsatisfactory answers, in addition to monitoring departmental performance on the timeliness of answering written parliamentary questions.

Further updates on the inquiry will be announced as it progresses.
