Procedure Committee launches inquiry on Written Parliamentary Questions in Session 2023-24

21 November 2024

The House of Commons Procedure Committee has launched a new inquiry into the departmental performance of Written Parliamentary Questions (WPQs) in the 2023-24 parliamentary session.

Chair quote

Cat Smith MP, Chair of the Procedure Committee, said: “Transparency and accountability from Government is vital, and Members of Parliament deserve to receive timely and satisfactory responses to Written Parliamentary Questions.

The Committee will look closely at the response rates from individual departments in the last parliamentary session, and will report back in due course with our findings and recommendations.”

Since 2010, the Committee’s predecessors have been routinely engaged in the monitoring of Government responses to WPQs. This has, in the past, taken the form of quality monitoring work, offering Members of Parliament an avenue to challenge unsatisfactory answers, in addition to monitoring departmental performance on the timeliness of answering WPQs.

Further updates on the inquiry will be announced as it progresses.
