Economics of biodiversity

The Committee will be pressing the Minister as to how the Government will respond to recommendations set out in Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta’s recent report on the economics of biodiversity.

The review recommends that treasuries around the world need to change how they measure economic success and reform their financial institutions to account for nature. Further, Professor Dasgupta issued a call-to-action for governments to recognise that their economies are embedded in nature, and that decision making must reflect this.

The Committee will discuss with Minister Kemi Badenoch how the recommendations can be implemented. Members will also be scrutinising how the new Budget and HMT policy decisions affect biodiversity, and look to future solutions as to how nature can be better embedded across the economy.

The Committee’s report is expected to be published later in the Spring.
