Committee welcome legal aid for Hyde Park Bombing case

8 February 2018

The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee welcomes the news that families have been granted legal aid to bring a civil case against one of the alleged Hyde Park bombers.

Last week, Committee members met with injured victims and families who had lost loved ones during the Troubles. The issue of access to legal aid was raised, as well as the matter of compensation for those suffering with lifelong injuries.

"We are pleased that the decision has been made to provide victims of the Hyde Park Bombing with legal aid to launch a civil suit.

Last week the Committee met with victims of violence during the Troubles. Their determination and tenacity in seeking justice is humbling.

We have heard how too often victims have been left unsupported and, inevitably, how this draws comparison with the perpetrators of violence. Innocent victims must have confidence in the assistance of the State and know that their assailants will be dealt with severely, not sympathetically."
