NI horticulture and arable farming sector examined

13 June 2018

The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee hears from Growers who operate in very different circumstances from livestock farmers and who will encounter distinct challenges and opportunities when the UK leaves the European Union.

Witnesses

Wednesday 13 June in Committee Room 6, Palace of Westminster

At 9.30am

  • Dr Barbara Erwin, Chair, Horticulture Forum Northern Ireland
  • Sarah Baker, Strategic Insights Manager, Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board
  • Elaine Shaw, Chief Executive, Northway Mushrooms
  • Ian Duff, Co-ordinator, Northern Ireland Stakeholder Potato Promotion Group

Purpose of the session

The Committee will explore how the sector can be encouraged to develop and prosper under a new agriculture policy, and seek farmers views on the UK Government's ongoing Health and Harmony consultation.  A key issue will be ensuring growers are able to access the agricultural workforce on which the sector relies, but other topics for discussion will be trading opportunities after Brexit and mechanisms for ensuring food and plant health standards are maintained.
