Westminster budget for NI necessary but backwards step says Chair

6 November 2017

Chair of the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, Dr Andrew Murrison MP responds to James Brokenshire's announcement of Northern Ireland budget bill.

Chair's comment

"It is massively disappointing that the parties have failed. Very few people want greater involvement from Westminster in the governance of Northern Ireland but we can't keep kicking the can down the road. Westminster must act where Stormont fails otherwise people will begin to suffer. They deserve better.

The Committee I chair will be closely examining the budget that must now be set.

The parties must carry on searching for a remedy to the current impasse. We should be in no doubt, setting the budget from Westminster represents a significant backwards step."
