Challenges and opportunities facing Northern Ireland agricultural sector examined

The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee hears from the Chief Executive of the Ulster Farmers Union and leading academics in agricultural policy on key issues facing farming in Northern Ireland as the UK's post-Brexit agricultural strategy is developed.

Purpose of the session
The Committee will examine the challenges and opportunities facing the Northern Ireland agricultural sector as the UK prepares to leave the European Union. Members will ask what aspects of the Common Agricultural Policy might be worth replicating post-Brexit, and how future policy might diverge from the current approach to best support the sector and encourage its development.
The session will also look at issues arising from Brexit that will play a central role in deciding the prosperity of the agricultural sector in Northern Ireland, including:
- the impact of trade policy and the importance of securing markets for produce,
- maintaining cross-border cooperation with respect to supply chains and produce standards, and
- maintaining the supply of agricultural labour
