JCNSS Chair: ransomware consultation “important step forward”
15 January 2025
The Chair of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy (JCNSS) has responded to news that the Government is consulting on proposals to reduce the risk of ransomware.
Ransomware is malicious software that invades computer systems, ranging from members of the public to large companies or public bodies. Attacks can leave entire systems and networks vulnerable, at an enormous potential cost.
The previous JCNSS published a report in 2023 on the risks of ransomware attacks. The report warned that large chunks of UK critical national infrastructure (CNI) are vulnerable to ransomware, that the UK’s regulations were insufficient and outdated, and that most victims received insufficient support from law enforcement or government agencies.
Chair comment
Responding to the Government’s announcement, Chair of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, Matt Western, said:
“Ransomware is a real and growing threat to the UK’s national security. We cannot allow our public organisations and critical national infrastructure to be held to ransom by malicious actors.
“I am pleased that the Government recognises the gravity of this problem and is acting on has reflected on the previous Committee’s recommendations. This consultation is an important step, and I hope the Government will continue to engage with our Committee as it seeks to tackle this growing challenge .”
