Liaison Committee invites Prime Minister to give evidence

21 May 2020

The Liaison Committee met for the first time today under its new Chair, Sir Bernard Jenkin.

The Committee has written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, inviting him to give evidence to the Committee as soon as possible in June.

Chair's comments

Sir Bernard Jenkin said:

“At this difficult time, it is crucially important that the Government is scrutinised effectively. The Prime Minister has been answering questions from the media and in the House, but Select Committee Chairs have yet to have that opportunity.”

On his new role as Chair he said:

“The detailed scrutiny provided by Committees require Ministers and officials to be open, to bring out truth and to increase understanding within Government, as well as more widely. This is the only way to promote learning and improvement, and this principle is our guide. The role of committees in conducting evidence-based scrutiny of Government policy is more crucial than ever in our current very challenging circumstances.”
