The Justice Committee is holding an evidence session as part of its inquiry into Prison Population 2022: planning for the future.

Focus of the hearing
The purpose of this session is to examine three of the terms of reference for the inquiry:
- What has led to the current size and make-up of the prison population?
- To what extent are these factors taken into account in prison population projections?
- What impact does reducing reoffending by existing prisoners and those under the supervision of probation services have on the size and make-up of the prison population?
More specifically, the Committee will have the opportunity to discuss:
- The impact of changes in sentencing legislation, sentencing guidelines and social factors on sentencing trends and the use of imprisonment
- The nature and value of research on the effectiveness of sentencing
- Potential measures for managing effectively the predicted growth in the prison population.
