Justice Committee: weekly update

At the end of sitting weeks the Justice Committee publishes a brief summary of its activities in the form of a weekly update.
This week's meeting
The Committee met on Tuesday 28 February, to take evidence on Prison reform: governor empowerment and prison performance from private prison providers and then from the Prisons and Probation Minister, Sam Gyimah MP. The Committee also held a private meeting on Wednesday 1 March, at which it agreed a report on Draft Sentencing Guidelines on bladed articles and offensive weapons, which will be published on Wednesday 8 March at 0001.

Papers published this week
The Committee published additional written submissions relating to Prison Reform and Implications of Brexit for the justice system. It also published an exchange of correspondence between the Chair and the Lord Chancellor on the role of the magistracy, following the Government's Response to the Committee's Report on the subject.

(The initial deadline for submissions to this inquiry was Friday 18 November. The Committee has visited Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man in connection with this work. Oral evidence was taken on Wednesday 22 February, and a report is in preparation.)
Future business
The Committee has no public meeting next week. The Committee's report on Draft Sentencing Guidelines on bladed articles and offensive weapons will be published on Wednesday 8 March at 0001.
