Justice Committee: weekly update

At the end of sitting weeks the Justice Committee publishes a brief summary of its activities in the form of a weekly update.
This week's meeting
The Committee held its first evidence session in its sub-inquiry into governor empowerment and prison performance, as part of its prison reform inquiry, hearing from a panel of experts on the subject on Wednesday 18 January.

Government Response
On Friday 20 January the Government published its Response to the Committee's Report on the treatment of young adults in the criminal justice system, published on 26 October 2016. The Chair of the Committee commented on the Response, describing it as disappointing.
Visit to the Isle of Man
The Committee visited the Isle of Man on Monday 16 January and Tuesday 17 January to hold discussions in relation to its inquiry into the implications of Brexit for the Crown Dependencies.

The Committee published a number of written submissions to its sub-inquiry on governor empowerment and prison performance in its prison reform inquiry.

The Committee has four ongoing inquiries:
- Inquiry: Prison reform (The initial deadline for submissions to this inquiry was Friday 30 September 2016. The Committee is continuing to accept submissions. The most recent oral evidence session was on Wednesday 14 December 2016.)
- Sub-inquiry: Prison reform: Governor empowerment and prison performance (The deadline for submissions to this sub-inquiry was on Monday 9 January 2017. Anyone wishing to make a submission should contact the Committee staff. The first oral evidence session was on Wednesday 18 January 2017)
- Inquiry: The implications of Brexit for the justice system (The initial deadline for submissions to this inquiry was Friday 11 November 2016. The Committee is continuing to accept submissions. The most recent oral evidence session was on Tuesday 10 January 2016.)
- Inquiry: Disclosure of youth criminal records (The initial deadline for submissions to this inquiry was Friday 11 November 2016. The Committee held an informal seminar on this matter on Tuesday 13 December 2016, and is continuing to accept submissions.)
- Inquiry: The implications of Brexit for the Crown Dependencies (The initial deadline for submissions to this inquiry was Friday 18 November 2016. The Committee is continuing to accept submissions.)
Future business
The next meeting of the Justice Committee will be on Tuesday 31 January, for the second oral evidence session on 'Prison reform: Governor empowerment and prison performance'. Further details will be announced next week.
