Lady Chief Justice takes questions from Justice Committee

22 November 2024

Rt Hon Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, the first female President of the Courts of England and Wales and Head of the Judiciary of England and Wales, will take questions from the Justice Committee during an evidence session on Tuesday, 26 November.

The Lady Chief Justice (LCJ) sits in both the Criminal and Civil divisions of the Court of Appeal, in the Divisional Court and also, by invitation, in the UK Supreme Court. Dame Sue Carr was sworn in as the first Lady Chief Justice in a live-streamed ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice on 2 October 2023.

MPs on the cross-party committee, chaired by Labour MP Andy Slaughter, will examine the work of the Lady Chief Justice and discuss some of the key issues facing the judiciary and the courts during a wide-ranging evidence session. It follows the publication of her Annual Report.

The session is expected to touch upon the Concordat process, Crown Court sitting days and the backlog. MPs will also explore delays and reforms across civil and family justice, the impact of legislation on tribunals, as well as the HM Courts and Tribunals Service reform programme and data. Judicial capacity and conduct, plus the safety of judges may also be explored.
