Chair comment
“I am delighted to be elected Chair of the Justice Committee and look forward to working cross-party with colleagues in the months ahead to examine the policies and spending of the Ministry of Justice and associated public bodies, as well as scrutinising new Government legislation.
“It is no secret that significant parts of the justice system are in crisis. From overcrowded prisons and court backlogs to probation capacity and legal advice deserts, there is an urgent need to hold key decision-makers to account with fairness and probity.
“I will work tirelessly alongside my new Committee colleagues once appointed to identify key flaws across the justice remit and stress test proposed solutions to increase confidence in the legal system and uphold the rule of law.”
