Dominic Raab to face Justice Committee for first time as Lord Chancellor
25 November 2021
The Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor Dominic Raab will make his first appearance before MPs on the Justice Committee in a wide-ranging session on his priorities at the Ministry of Justice, including how he balances these with his responsibilities as Deputy Prime Minister.
Background to the session
The committee are likely to ask questions on the significant backlog in courts, the Government’s intention to overhaul the Human Rights Act, means-testing for legal aid and proposed reforms to the parole system.
The session is also expected to focus on the prison building programme and measures to support the mental health of prisoners, following failings identified in a report by the Joint Criminal Justice Inspectorates earlier this month and the Committee’s own report in September.
The session is part of the Committee’s regular scrutiny of the policies and spending of the Ministry of Justice.
