The Justice Committee holds the first of two planned evidence sessions for the Committee's relaunched inquiry into the ageing prison population

Aim of the session

The aim is to gather further evidence for the inquiry relating to its original terms of reference, including on:

  • The definition of the older prisoner and how the cohort differs from the rest of the prison population;
  • Healthcare and social care of older prisoners;
  • The provision of regime modifications for older prisoners;
  • Accommodation standards for older prisoners and others with disabilities and reduced mobility;
  • Issues around the resettlement and release of older prisoners; and
  • Whether a national strategy for older prisoners should be produced.

In addition, the session will aim to cover the risks older prisoners face from COVID-19.
