Call for Evidence

The work of the Committee

The Modernisation Committee was set up to “consider reforms to House of Commons procedures, standards, and working practices.”

Following the Committee’s endorsement of a memorandum from the Leader of the House of Commons and Chair of the Committee, Rt Hon Lucy Powell MP, setting out three strategic aims and some initial workstreams, the Committee asked for views on what topics it should prioritise for action as it developed its work programme.  The public call for views ran from 17 October to 16 December 2024. Alongside this the Committee held a number of engagement events within Parliament and received additional ideas through an anonymised online form.

The Committee received submissions from both external and internal stakeholders, including MPs, parliamentary staff and members of the public, about what additional ideas they had for work it could take forward, covering the strategic aims of:

  • driving up standards;
  • improving culture and working practices; and
  • reforming Parliamentary procedures to make the House of Commons more effective.

The Committee analysed these views and has published a memorandum on its next steps

This call for written evidence has now closed.
